Michael VanScoy, Class of 1994

Michael VanScoy, 38, of Lake Bluff, Illinois passed away on March 23, 2010. He was born February 18, 1972, in Hinsdale, Illinois, the son of Mary H. Coan and step-father Robert G. Shaw. He was the youngest of Mary’s three sons. Mike graduated from The University of Michigan in 1994, following in the footsteps of his oldest brother David VanScoy, his mother Mary Coan, and her father Robert Coan.

He was active in Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, graduating with honors and a Bachelor of Science degree, emphasis in Business Administration. Mike attended Lake Forest High School, graduating in 1990, where he excelled in the classroom and on the LFHS ice hockey team, serving as co-captain. Mike was the founder and owner of MVS Building Corporation, a high-end residential builder in Lake Forest. Previously, he was co-founder of a state-of-the-art fully integrated sports complex located in Lansing, Michigan. Previously and following college graduation, Mike was a senior consultant with Arthur Andersen in Chicago where he worked on resolving major issues such as the Orange County, California bankruptcy, and Bureau of Indian Affairs governance matters. He was an avid fan and participant in sports (especially hockey and golf), physical fitness, and car racing. He is survived by his mother Mary and step-father Bob of Marco Island, FL and Lake Forest, IL; his brother Bob VanScoy (Barbara) of Charlotte, NC; his sister-in-law Kara Clark (Frank) of Glenview, IL; his Uncle Bob and Aunt Dee Coan of Palm Harbor, FL; his nephews William and Hunter VanScoy of Charlotte, NC, and his nieces Ashley and Grace Clark of Glenview. He is also survived by his Husky dogs Sadie and Diablo. Mike was predeceased by his brother David VanScoy and his beloved dog Bo. A private family graveside service was held at Lake Forest Cemetery.
