What is the memory that makes you laugh hardest today?"I think of all the fun and funny times we had together in my four years as a Phi Delt (1975 – 1979), the most amazing was my sophomore roommate, Dennis Dooley. Dennis was generally a pretty serious guy, but after a couple of Stroh’s, his alter-ego—Spiderman—would emerge. Spidey could climb up the corner of the house and work his way around the outside of the building on a ledge that was less than one inch wide. Even more amazing was that he did it in the leather platform shoes that were the style of the day. At the end of the year, we “bronzed” the shoes and gave them to him at a big party. Of course, we all egged him on to take one more trip up the side of the house. He did, and with a couple dozen people watching and cheering him on, for the first time ever, he fell off the house, right into a bush next to the front porch. Thankfully, he was lubricated enough that the fall didn’t hurt him a bit. We laughed pretty hard when it happened, and still do every time I hear the story." - Tom Walsh, '79
Describe the best party"The best party was probably the “BFP” which we held in my senior year in the spring of 1979. The fraternities at U-M were very competitive with each other, to the point that there was very little positive interaction between them. For example, the SAE’s across Washtenaw Ave. from the PDT house were our bitter rivals, and we would never think of getting together socially. A group of us had road tripped to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and were impressed that the fraternities all seemed to get along together pretty well and had often gone to each other’s houses for parties. In particular, it seemed that the frats would rotate who would host a party on the weekends after the bars closed. We picked up on the idea and planned the “Big F------ing Party”. We invited most of the fraternities and sororities to what was the first “open party” any of us remembered on campus. I don’t recall how many kegs of beer we had, but it was probably close to 20. Men and women from all over campus came to the party and a great time was had by all!" - Tom Walsh, '79
Describe your favorite/best road trip"The best road trip was also senior year when a group of us went to Madison, WI for the U-M/Wisconsin football game. Jeff Post, Tom Horlacher, Joe Kraus, Drew Spring, and Bob Lewandowski were along for a great trip. The campus scene in Madison was always wild, especially on football weekends, and it certainly was on that weekend, as well. Poster was a cheerleader on the U-M squad, and he brought along an extra cheerleader “M” sweater with him. He let me borrow it, and we walked together to the game from the local Phi house. The Wisconsin cheerleaders rode to the game on a vintage red fire engine, and they spotted us as we walked to the game. They invited us to jump on the “Bucky Wagon” and we drove to the stadium, through the gates, and right out onto the field! It was quite an experience, and all the Phis had a lot of fun on the trip." - Tom Walsh, '79
What is the one memory you have shared or will share with your children or grandchildren?"My greatest memory was the great friendships, brotherhood and camaraderie we had during my time as an active in PDT at U-M. I truly had “brothers for life” among the guys, and a great many of us still keep in regular contact." - Tom Walsh, '79
